TET officialy takes place in 3-first- days of Lunar Year. The most sacred moment is the New Year’s Eve, which is at 0 o’clock to begin the new lunar year. On New Year’s Day, the Vietnameses believe that everything must be new and different, from the material to the human heart, so about ten days before Tết, they often clean house, buy cooking ingredients, shop new clothes to wear on this occasion .. Many customs are practices during Tết: People visit each other and wish each other New Year’s greetings, ancestor worship, children shall receive Lucky Money containing in a red envelope.
On this occasion, all families will make the featured and traditional specialities to enjoy and welcome guests such as: Chung cake, dried young bamboo soup; Boiled chicken; beans; Sausages; sticky rice; Melon seeds, jam … All the cooking ingredients will be prepared and shopped right before New Year’s Eve.
Everytime when Spring’s coming, Tet is not only the desire of children to have new clothes, freely eating jam/ cakes or receiving lucky money, but also brings up deeply meaningful senses for aldults. It is the exchange point between the old and new year, between the movement cycle of heaven and earth. In addition, it is the desire for enduring life, the harmony between Heaven – Earth – People, the cohesion in community and family. Lunar New Year is also an opportunity to look towards the roots – the spiritual and deeply emotional value of the Vietnameses which has become the beautiful tradition for many generations.
Tet always has a very special meaning associated with all Vietnamese people. For many foreigners living and working in Vietnam, this will be the prime time to discover a lot of interesting culture as well as witness a different image of the country, especially, the bustling atmosphere when Tet’s coming to the town.
